Hersonissos literary meaning peninsula, east of Heraklion and west of the Mallia gulf, is an important centre of mass tourism in Crete with a great number of hotels, rooms to let, restaurants, Cafe-bars catering the needs of thousands of tourists.
The beautiful sand beaches of Hersonissos attracts a great deal of people in the mornings and at night a myriad of shops are roaring with activity. Beyond this noisy background the visitor can still discover other appealing spots of Hersonissos.
Those who venture small trips will be rewarded by forgotten paths leading to quaint greek villages. The area is well connected to Heraklion and the Mallia gulf with regular bus services. Hersonissos was the harbour of ancient Littos where the divinity called Vritomartis was worshipped and as the findings discovered in this area suggest was identified with the godess Artemis.
